Beach Safety

Know Before You Go

Panama City Beach takes water safety seriously. A few things every guest should know before heading to the shore.

Beach Warning Flags

Double Red — Water Closed
Water is closed to the public. No swimming under any circumstances. Violations carry a $500 fine (first offense) and possible jail time.
Red — High Hazard
High surf and/or strong currents present. Experienced swimmers only.
Yellow — Medium Hazard
Moderate surf and/or currents. Exercise caution.
Green — Low Hazard
Calm conditions. Always swim with caution regardless of flag color.
Purple — Dangerous Marine Life
Jellyfish, stingrays, or other marine life present in the water.

Absence of flags does not assure safe waters.

If Caught in a Rip Current

  • Don't fight the current — you will exhaust yourself quickly.
  • Swim parallel to shore to escape the current's pull, then swim back in.
  • If you cannot escape, float or tread water and conserve energy.
  • Call or wave for assistance — lifeguards and beachgoers will respond.

Sea Turtles — Nesting Season May–October

Hatchlings emerge at night and must reach the water quickly to survive — but beachfront lighting can draw them inland. During nesting season:

  • Keep flashlights and phone lights off on the beach at night.
  • Close blinds and curtains at sunset.
  • Turn off balcony lights after dark.
  • Call PCB Police at 850-233-5000 if you see nesting or hatchling turtles.

Leave No Trace

Items left on the beach between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM will be disposed of by city personnel. Items may be kept overnight at the foot of the dune at your own risk.
